You’ve probably invested a fair bit of time, and probably some money, into getting your website to its current status. Now that you’ve got it where you want it, it’s time to share your site with the rest of the folks on the internet.
Here are 5 tips to help get more people to your web site
Visit other sites – It’s not enough to just tell people about your website, you need to be an active part of the community that you are in. Comment on the blogs that you read, and provide a link back to yours. Keep it to only one link, or else your comment might look like spam, and will end up in the sites spam folder. And no one wants to be there. Show some link love by linking to other sites, and they will often return the favour.
Share awesome and original content – If you regularly have unique content on your site, people will start coming to you to enjoy it first. Some examples of unique content: opinion or experience based blog posts, unique videos, and podcasts. It’s ok to share info that you’ve found on other websites, but it’s also important to be a contributor. You are an expert on your topic, so give your audience something they can’t find anywhere else. And then let them share it with their audience.
Be social – It’s unlikely that you aren’t already on at least one of the other social sites, but if you want to grow your audience, make it easier for them to share what they’ve found on your site with their followers. A facebook like button, appropriate plugins, and links to your favourite social sites will help you grow your audience.
Effective Keywords – Write your new content for the people that are going to read it, but it’s also important to weave in the appropriate keywords to increase the chances that people will be able to find your site organically. Stuffing your post with keywords is not a good plan, but if you have a choice between two words or phrases, and one is a more valuable keyword – the decision should be obvious.
Bribery – If you’ve got something to give away, share it on your website and promote the heck out of it. It doesn’t have to have a financial value; it could be a whitepaper/ebook of something in your field of expertise, it could be a trinket that you acquired somewhere, or it could be free consultation – it doesn’t matter. People love the word free, so if you can afford to give it away it will likely gain you a few more eyeballs on your site. And once they have been there once they will be back – because you are giving them excellent advice or a quality product – right?
Bonus Tip – Measure your traffic – Yes, this seems obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people forget to check their analytics. If you get a great response through one of the tips above, you probably want to repeat it. But if you aren’t regularly monitoring your site traffic with a tool like www.rankfanatic.com – how will you know if what you are doing is making a difference?
